- Equine assisted psychotherapy
- Family programme
- Cognitive behavioural therapy
Our therapists are also trained in Gestalt psychology, expressive therapy, person-centred therapy, motivational interviewing, metaphoric games, psychodrama, one-to-one therapy, voice movement therapy, art therapy, narrative therapy, transactional analysis and interpersonal therapy. We also offer a variety of alternative therapies including yoga, meditation, acupuncture, reiki and massage.
Group therapy is central to addiction treatment at Camino Recovery. Incorporating the guiding principles of the 12-step recovery programme (see below) it offers a supportive environment in which to cover a wide range of issues more effectively. This allows you to focus on what matters to you, while gaining the insight that comes from sharing your experiences with other people.
Working in a group gives you the reassurance that you are not alone. Following a clear set of principles it strengthens the recovery process by promoting self-esteem and encouraging balanced, supportive and non-judgemental relationships that can help to sustain your recovery.
Thank you for being such a help in my life. I am eternally grateful to everyone at Camino.
The 12-step recovery programme was first developed to treat alcohol addiction. It has since been adapted to treat other addictions including drugs, gambling, sex, relationships, love, co-dependency, exercise, work, self-harm, online gaming and eating disorders. Alongside group therapy it is widely accepted as the most universally effective treatment available.
The 12 steps are a guiding framework through which a variety of therapeutic interventions can be woven depending on your needs. This comprehensive, multi-dimensional approach allows you to assess the strengths and weaknesses of every aspect of your life: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It offers practical support, reduces feelings of shame and isolation and empowers you to nurture your own recovery.
There should be more places like Camino Recovery. This has been an inspirational experience.
EMDR is a very effective treatment for trauma, which is a common cause of addiction. This is a particular speciality at Camino Recovery, helping you to unlock traumatic memories so you can process the distressing thoughts and feelings that are attached to them. By resolving what may be an important factor behind your addiction, you are less likely to turn back to drugs or alcohol, for example, to try to cope with it.
I could not have gained the insights into my behaviour, feelings, emotions, and why they were formed without this valuable experience.
Beyond addiction treatment EMDR is used to help retired soldiers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
Camino Recovery is one of Europe’s leading centres for equine assisted psychotherapy, or EAP, which was pioneered by our programme director Don Lavender. It is a rewarding and effective treatment for addiction, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues including post-traumatic stress disorder.
EAP uses interaction with horses (not horse riding) to help you gain clarity over boundaries and relationships. Like EMDR it is an effective treatment for trauma, which is a common cause of addiction.
It helps you to:
- Build bonds of trust and support
- Improve verbal and non-verbal communication within relationships
- Gain personal insight into boundaries and relationships
- Increase your attention span and your readiness to learn about yourself and others
- Build your confidence and self esteem.
What I liked most was the innovative approach which complemented the traditional group therapy; techniques such as equine therapy gave me an insight into my relationships with others and left me feeling enthusiastic for the future.
Camino Recovery’s three-and-a-half-day family programme is open to anyone who lives with or cares about someone who has an addiction or lives with any level of dysfunction within their family system. This person does not have to be on one of our other addiction treatment programmes for you to take part.
Above all, it is designed to promote your wellbeing. Through education and guidance you will learn that you cannot cure or control your loved one’s addiction, but that you can take responsibility for your own health and happiness.
I found it incredibly helpful in beginning to understand and come to terms with the nature of addictions.
The stress of living with alcohol or drug addiction can have physical, emotional, social and spiritual consequences. Families of addicts and alcoholics often feel confused, frustrated, angry and helpless. By identifying how addiction affects families and what family members can do to take care of themselves, the programme promotes healing and helps you to alleviate confusion and anxiety. It will show you that you did not cause the addiction and that you cannot cure it either. By becoming aware of the beliefs and experiences that shape your own behaviours, you find new healthy ways of coping with both addiction and relationships.
Your family week helped us to open our hearts to one another and be comfortable together. We could not have done it alone.
It is a supportive, educational experience that involves:
- Presentations by clinical staff
- Group discussions
- Personal goal-setting
- Reading and reflection
- Fellowship with other participants
- Counsellor-facilitated family conferences
The family programme far exceeded my expectations in almost every way. It has helped my relationship with my brother and with my parents.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, has a wide range of practical applications including the treatment of impulse control, phobias, post traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, mood problems, personality disorder, addiction, psychosis and eating disorders.
CBT works by addressing your perception of a particular event or episode in your life and its subsequent impact on you. It works under the premise that it is not the event itself that triggers an emotional reaction but the way you perceived the event. CBT is practical and goal-orientated and can start very quickly after your initial assessment. The results are measurable and many people see immediate benefits. This helps your self-esteem and can enhance the other treatments we offer at the same time.
I do wish that more people had the opportunity to take the time and space to be at a place like Camino Recovery to begin to heal their lives.
