Have you overdone it this Christmas? Throughout the festive season alcohol as well as other substances tend to be more readily available, with society more readily condoning antisocial behaviour brought on by intoxication. January is Love Your Liver Month and with the month drawing to an end, it could be time to reassess your drinking habits
Love Your Liver campaign is a national awareness initiative designed to encourage the public to stop and think about the quantity of alcohol they consume.
Here are a few suggestions to help improve the health of your liver;
Take 2-3 days off alcohol a week. This will keep your total intake down and give your liver a chance to recover, providing there isn’t already any lasting damage. The liver is able to repair itself quickly, usually in as little as 24 hours.
Eat well, and take regular exercise. Those who are over weight are three times more likely to suffer liver disease if they drink alcohol. Less sugary drinks will also help optimise liver function.
Always tired? If you suffer from fatigue, ask your GP for a liver function test. The liver has no nerve endings therefore will struggle to tell the body when something is wrong, so if you have been pushing the boundaries on a regular basis recently you may need to check your liver.
