As one of the wealthiest Gulf nations, Bahrain has a mental healthcare system well above most other countries in the region. There is still a way to go before local facilities offer international standards of care for conditions such as anxiety however. This is due to the stigma Bahraini society has attached to the psychiatric field plus a lack of government funding for hospitals, clinics and other centres. The WHO Mental Health Atlas 2011 has estimated that 3.96% of the country’s total health budget was spent on mental healthcare, far below what is necessary.
Anxiety Treatment Facilities in Bahrain
What information we can get on the mental health field in Bahrain comes mostly from the WHO-AIMS Report for 2010. The country has one mental hospital located in the Salmaniya Medical Complex in Manama. This provides 20.6 beds per 100,000 people in the population of Bahrain. Other mental health facilities for those with conditions such as anxiety include four outpatient clinics and two day treatment centres. Overall, there are a total of 5.6 psychiatrists per 100,000 people working throughout the country. This is the highest rate out of all countries in the Arab world according to World Psychiatry, putting Bahrain amongst the top three nations in the region.
Prevalence of Anxiety in Bahraini Society
A number of studies have been done on the occurrence of anxiety in select demographics in Bahrain. One looked at primary care attendees and found that 17.3% had some form of generalised anxiety disorder. Of those who suffered from these mental conditions in the past, only 41% received treatment. Another examined a small group of expatriates and recorded that 20.3% of them exhibited some anxiety symptoms. Outstanding debt was a significant contributing factor. A third looked at patients with epilepsy and found that 26.09% of study participants suffered from death anxiety.
Attitudes to Anxiety in Bahrain
Since Bahrain is an Arab nation, its people have a certain stigma towards the psychiatric field and mental illnesses such as anxiety. This leads to a host of negative effects. For instance, some psychologists have noted that this attitude has disrupted future and current marriages with one party refusing the proposal or filing for divorce due to their partner’s mental condition.
Spreading awareness is the obvious solution to this with some slow progress being made throughout the years. For instance, Trade Arabia writes that more Bahrainis and expatriates are seeking support for anxiety especially after the uprising and unrest of 2011. The exact rate isn’t known though, meaning that this spike in treatment may be the result of a greater number of anxiety sufferers rather than a removal of local societal stigma.
