The proximity of Jordan to conflict-prone countries such as Syria and Iraq plus internal matters such as crime and domestic violence mean that there is a high need for post-trauma treatment in the country. This includes psychological as well as medical support to help victims recover from their past ordeals.
Growth in Jordan’s Mental Health Field
Overall, Jordan is seen as a country with a moderately successful healthcare field. MinnPost reports that the Centre for Victims of Torture (CVT) decided to work there because because the country has established mental health programs. This network of physicians makes it possible for the CVT to train mental health experts and give them the knowledge needed to provide western levels of care.
UNCHR is also trying to improve facilities and treatment for trauma, leading to a greater understanding of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) concepts across the country. To highlight these improvements, one staff member mentioned it is now difficult to locate an organisation that at least isn’t familiar with the levels of the [MHPSS] pyramid within Jordan.
Jordan has also hosted the annual international conference, Transgenerational Trauma: Communal Wounds and Victim Identities for the past three years. A fourth is now planned for October 2015. Talks last year included topics such as self-induced trauma releasing exercises, the use of rituals for healing trauma, and understanding the cultural stories of trauma victims. Hopefully the conference can further develop Jordan’s healthcare field within the area of trauma treatment.
Unmet Trauma Treatment Needs
There are, however, several areas which are lacking in Jordan’s mental healthcare field, especially when it comes to support for those suffering from post-traumatic stress. The UNCHR has noted that efforts to meet these unmet needs will have a significant impact on distress caused by past trauma in Jordanian society.
There are also no centres offering trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) in Jordan. This is a shame because a recent study entitled Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy: Cultural adaptations for application in Jordanian culture found that the implementation of TF-CBT was possible and would yield significant improvements for local patients.
The WHO-AIMS Report on Mental Health System in Jordan also states there are no coordinating bodies overseeing any public education and awareness campaigns on mental health and mental disorders which are run by the local government. Instead, international NGOs and agencies have been assisting with public education and awareness although this has been limited.
