In 2022, more than 6,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the European Union, with opioids (including heroin and other substances) present in 74 % of all fatalities.
In the UK and Wales, there were 4,907 deaths related to drug poisoning in 2022—the highest number ever recorded.
Meanwhile, in the USA, nearly 108,000 people died from drug-involved overdoses, including illegal or prescription drug deaths.
These staggering statistics are a sobering reminder of why we need National Recovery Month more than ever.
What is National Recovery Month?
National Recovery Month is a highly anticipated annual event stronger than ever after thirty-five years. The event celebrates those in recovery, highlights the importance of recovery practices, raises awareness, and advocates for greater access to cutting-edge therapies and treatments.
Since September 1989, the month has been an observance of awareness building. Started by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) with the slogan “Treatment Works!,” the event initially sought to highlight the dedication of professionals in the addiction field. In 1998, in an effort to broaden the scope of the message, SAMHSA rebranded as “National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month” to bring awareness and recognition to the professionals providing care as well as those struggling with both mental health challenges and substance use disorders.
By 2011, the event took its current title, “National Recovery Month,” reflecting a broader inclusivity—acknowledging healthcare workers, behavioural health specialists, and all individuals on their recovery journeys. Today, the month-long event increases understanding about mental health and addiction issues, offering education and resources to support patients and their families.
With origins in the USA, National Recovery Month has a global message which has gained even more relevance in the past decade in response to the rising opioid crisis, alarming rates of overdose, and a growing worldwide awareness of the urgent need for mental health and addiction treatment resources.
Here at Camino Recovery, we celebrate everyone who makes recovery possible. From the strong recovery community to dedicated professional service providers, families that show up, and communities that care, together, we can build a greater awareness of what recovery means. By promoting and supporting treatments for mental health and substance use disorders, we can help more people on the road to recovery and a better life.
“Prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.” — Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
