Group Therapy
What is group therapy?
Evidence-based practices are at the forefront of our clinical product here at Camino Recovery. Group therapy has, for decades, been recognised as a highly effective method of treatment. The main types of group therapy used here at Camino Recovery are as follows:
Psychodynamic process groups
This is a form of talk therapy based on the work of Sigmund Freud using the external world as a focal point.
Psychodrama
Using role playing and self presentation as an insight into lives, thoughts and behaviours.
Focused expressive groups
This uses artistic and visual actions as an expression of thoughts and feelings
Psychoeducational groups
Uses education around the workings and patterns of certain conditions as a motivation to change.
12-step facilitation, cognitive behavioural, Gestalt groups
Uses the present moment rather than past events as the focal point making you aware of what you are doing and how you are doing it.
Group therapy is central to treatment at Camino Recovery. Although speaking about personal issues to others may be a new concept, group therapy offers a supportive environment in which to cover a wide range of issues more effectively. This allows you to focus on what matters to you, while gaining the insight that comes from sharing your experiences and those of other people.

What are the benefits of group therapy?
Group therapy is a powerful technique that has huge advantages over individual therapy, such as:
- Putting things into perspective and gaining support/insight from others
- Learning to break out of isolation
- Learning to communicate (speaking, listening, asking for help), modelling
- Dealing with confrontation
- Providing a focused platform (time and space) in which to deal with certain issues
Working in a group gives you the reassurance that you are not alone. Following a clear set of principles strengthens the recovery process by promoting self-esteem and encouraging balanced, supportive and non-judgemental relationships that can help to sustain your recovery.
